IPL Dog Team Excursions

Once again this year, the IPL group and their teacher Daniel Annanack organized dog team excursions for all the students in primary. Leevan and Daniel mushed groups of students to Old Woman's Lake where they had a tent set up. The students made fires, ate lunch, jigged for trout and hunted ptarmigan. Students and teachers really enjoyed the excursions. The IPL boys and girls did a super job at helping out and taking good care of the younger students--GREAT WORK!

IPL Girls

Ulluriaq School has piloted the Girl's IPL Program (Individual People Learning). Annie is the program's teacher-- and it is widely known that these students have continued to attend classes because they love their new teacher. This is the first year that we have had a girl's IPL program, and it is proving to be a great success at keeping our students in the school.

Annie mainly teaches Inuit culture, such as sewing and cooking skills, as well as camping on the land. The girls are working on many useful projects that teaches them life skills as well as about their own heritage.

Inuit Culture Day 2008

Food cacheThanks to the Inuit Staff at Ulluriaq, one of the biggest highlights of this school year was undoubtedly Inuit Culture Day. On a beautiful, sunny spring day in March, the entire school gathered in the forest to learn about and celebrate Inuit culture. The event was launched with Johnny George Annanack lighting a traditional soap stone oil lamp.

There were five tents set up in the trees just south of the community. In each of the tents Inuit Elders shared knowledge about sewing, tanning skins, cooking, music and other skills. Outside of the tents, students learned about dog sledding, seal hunting, how a traditional outdoor freezer worked—to name only a few. A traditional lunch comprised of only country food was shared with all those interested from the school and from the community.
